Crocker Park Gazebo

90 Minutes

Explore the streets of  The Town That Carried the Revolution™

Step into the Marblehead most history books barely mention — the harbor town whose fishermen and mariners didn’t just watch the Revolution unfold, they helped move it.
This walking tour follows the bold decisions, daring crossings, and unexpected turns that gave Washington’s army a fighting chance.

You’ll stand where local patriots seized military stores before the first shots were fired, trace the footsteps of Colonel John Glover’s regiment, and discover how a working seaport turned seamanship into strategy.

Along the way, you’ll uncover the moments most visitors never hear about — the risks taken, the winter crossings, the local rivalries — and see why historians still credit this small town with playing an outsized role in America’s fight for independence.

Marblehead’s Role in the American Revolution

Marblehead played a significant and often under-recognized role in the American Revolution. As early as 1774, local patriots seized military supplies from Fort Sewall, demonstrating that this working harbor town was prepared to take action before open conflict began.

When war broke out, Marblehead’s maritime expertise proved indispensable. Colonel John Glover’s regiment — composed largely of local fishermen and seamen — helped transport Continental troops across the East River following the Battle of Long Island and later across the Delaware River during Washington’s winter campaign. These crossings became pivotal moments in the war’s early stages.

Throughout the conflict, Marblehead’s ships, harbor access, and skilled mariners supported the Continental Army in ways that extended well beyond a single battle. Today, historians continue to recognize the town’s meaningful contribution to the broader Revolutionary effort.
